Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental (anxiety) disorder that develops as a result of experiencing or being exposed to a traumatic event such as combat or sexual assault. People affected by PTSD may have intrusive thoughts, be hyper-vigilant, have flashbacks of the event. People who have experienced repeated sexual abuse or physical harm are more likely to develop PTSD. People may develop further psychological problems such as depression and panic attacks as well as physiological problems such as headaches, stomach pains, fatigue etc.
Medication and psychotherapy have been proven to be effective in treating PTSD.
